What's Developing on the Near Southside of Chicago?

The near South Community Plan provides for the redevelopment of the South Loop and Near South Communities. Included in the plan is two square miles from Congress Parkway, Lakeshore Drive, South Branch of the Chicago River and Stevenson Expressway (I-55) not including Grant Park or Chinatown areas southwest of Cermak Road and Clark Street.

Portions located east of Lakeshore Drive contain Soldier Field, the home of the Chicago Bear's Football League, the eastern half of McCormick Place (Chicago's main convention center) and the Field Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium and Northerly Island.

The Southside of Chicago redevelopment is currently underway with major residential and mix-used building. Also, in preparation for the 2016 Olympics, the Olympic Village is going to be located on in the Douglas community on a 37-acre truck parking lot just south of McCormick place.

History of South Side Chicago

The South Side is truly an ever changing community of diverse ethnic and cultural influences which evolved from a Native American area, then blue collar, an elite socialite residential district, an African American neighborhood, later a center for crime and slums in the 1940's, a public housing, a warehouse district, and now the recent revitalized residential district. Truly an amazing reinventing of a neighborhood!

The Southside has its own major league baseball team The Chicago White Sox. Also hosts most of the major convention business for the City of Chicago. It boasts of the Gospel Music of Thomas Dorsey and Mahalia Jackson and the Blues of Muddy Waters.
